To a solution of 4-(3-hydroxy-benzyl)-piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (300 mg, 1.0 mmol) in DMSO (5.0 mL) were added Cs2CO3 (660 mg, 2.0 mmol) and 2-chloro-3-pyridinecarbonitrile (172 mg, 1.2 mmol). The mixture was heated at 60° C. for 90 min. The reaction mixture was cooled to rt, poured into water, and extracted with EtOAc (3×). The organic layer was separated and dried (Na2SO4). The crude residue was purified (FCC) to give 4-[3-(3-cyano-pyridin-2-yloxy)-benzyl]-piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (229 mg, 56%).
