To a solution of 3-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-5-methoxy-1H-inden-1-one (810 mg, 2.98 mmol) obtained in Step 2 in CH2Cl2 (10 mL) at 0° C. was added dropwise a solution of Br2 (571 mg, 3.57 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (3 mL). The mixture was stirred for 3 h at room temperature. The reaction was diluted with H2O (10 mL) and extracted with CH2Cl2. The extracts were washed with H2O and brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (CH2Cl2/hexanes) to afford the desired product (1.0 g, 95%).
