Reaction Steps

To a suspension of (Z)-2-(4-fluoro-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-phenylacrylonitrile (14.23 g, 56.2 mmol) in EtOH was added sodium borohydride (2.66 g, 70.2 mmol) and stirred at room temperature over night. Poured into ice-water, added 5% citric acid and extracted three times with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated to obtain 15.9 g of an orange oil.
