To a 30 mL vial containing (E)-methyl 3-(4-((6-methoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)oxy)phenyl)acrylate (100 mg, 0.22 mmol) in DCM (1 mL) was added BBr3 (1 M in heptane, 0.224 mL, 0.22 mmol) and the reaction was stirred for 1 h at room temperature. The reaction mixture was quenched with 4 mL MeOH and stirred for 10 min at room temperature. The crude material was concentrated onto silica gel and purified by column chromatography (SiO2, 1-100% EtOAc/Heptane) to afford (E)-methyl 3-(4-((6-hydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)oxy)phenyl)acrylate (11 mg, 0.03 mmol, 12% yield), and a mixture of (E)-methyl 3-(4-((2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-6-methoxybenzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)oxy)phenyl)acrylate and (E)-methyl 3-(4-((6-hydroxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)oxy)phenyl)acrylate (32 mg, 0.07 mmol, 33% yield). LC/MS (m/z, MH+): 433.2.
