To a suspension of potassium-tert-butylate (2.052 g) in tert-butanol (25 ml) was added methyl-6-methoxynicotinate (2.5 g). 2,4-Dichlorobenzyl cyanide (2.782 g) was added portion wise. The mixture was heated to 100° C. for 1.5 h. After cooling to room temperature, water (100 ml) was added and the mixture was washed with diethyl ether. The aqueous phase was neutralized with concentrated aqueous HCl and extracted with EtOAc. The organic phase was washed with water and with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated to dryness to give the title compound (1.407 g) as a yellow foam that was used in the next step without further purification. MS (m/e)=321.0 [M+H+].
