tert-butyl [1,1-Dimethyl-3-(2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzimidazol-1-yl)-propyl]-carbamate, benzyl chloride and potassium-tert-butoxide are stirred overnight at ambient temperature in dimethylsulphoxide. The alkylation product tert-butyl [3-(3-benzyl-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzimidazol-1-yl)-1,1-dimethyl-propyl]-carbamate obtained from the reaction is then treated with trifluoroacetic acid/dichloromethane in order to cleave the protective group.
