Procedure
Potassium hydroxide (1.0 mL, 1.8 mmol, 1.0 N solution) was added to a suspension of ethyl 3-hydroxy-6-(methylsulfonyl)quinoxaline-2-carboxylate (249 mg, 0.84 mmol) in ethanol (30 mL) and the resulting mixture was heated at reflux for 2 h. The cooled mixture was diluted with water (10 mL), acidified to pH 1 and the resulting solids were collected by filtration under reduced pressure to provide 3-hydroxy-6-(methylsulfonyl)quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid as an off-white solid: 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.07 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 1H), 7.87-7.84 (m, 2H), 3.31 (s, 3H) ppm.
