Procedure

(4-Chloro-2-nitro-phenyl)hydrazine hydrochloride (30 g, 0.14 mol) prepared in Step A and methyl pyruvate (14.4 mL, 0.16 mol) were dissolved in methanol (300 mL), and sodium acetate (14.2 g, 0.17 mol) was added thereto. The reaction solution was stirred for 8 h at room temperature, and the resulting yellow solid was filtered, washed with water and methanol, and dried to give the title compound (30 g, Yield 82%).
