Sodium hydride (5.5 g, 137.8 mmol) and 4-methoxybenzylmercaptan (15.4 mL, 110.2 mmol) were dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (150 mL), and the mixture was stirred for 10 min at 0° C. To the resulting solution was added in drops (R)-4-BOC-amino-5-methanesulfonyloxy-pentanoic acid ethyl ester (46.7 g, 137.8 mmol) prepared in Step B, and the mixture was stirred for 4 h at 0° C. Water was added thereto to quench the reaction, and the reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate, washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by column chromatography to give the title compound.
