To a solution of (3S,4S)-tert-butyl 3-(bis(4-methoxyphenyl)(phenyl)methoxy)-4-(methylsulfonyloxy)pyrrolidine-1-carboxylate (4.0 g, 6.85 mmol) in anhydrous DMSO (70 mL) was added sodium azide (1.78 g, 27.4 mmol). The resulting mixture was heated at 100° C. for 18 hours. The solution was cooled to ambient temperature, poured into water (150 mL) and the solid which separated was collected by filtration and washed with water and dried to afford (3R,4S)-tert-butyl 3-azido-4-(bis(4-methoxyphenyl)(phenyl)methoxy)pyrrolidine-1-carboxylate (3.37 g, 93%).
