Procedure

To a stirred mixture of 3-amino-N-[4-(6-methylbenzothiazol-2-yl)-phenyl]-benzamide (0.50 g, 1.39 mmol) and paraformaldehyde (0.059 g, 1.95 mmol) in MeOH (15 ml) at 0° C. was added dropwise a solution of sodium methoxide in MeOH (0.5 M, 3.9 ml, 1.95 mmol). The reaction mixture was then heated under reflux for 1 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, sodium borohydride (0.081 g, 2.09 mmol) was added and heating was continued under reflux for 1 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C. amd 1 M NaOH solution (10 ml) was added, followed by extraction with DCM (3×70 ml). The combined organic extracts were dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent removed under reduced pressure to give an almost colourless solid. This was purified by flash chromatography (1:1 Hexane/EtOAc) to give the title compound (0.096 g, 18%) as a colourless solid.
