Procedure

To a solution of 3-[(2,4-dimethoxybenzylsulfamoyl)methyl]benzoic acid methyl ester (5 g) in methanol (20 ml) was added 2M NaOH (20 ml), and the solution was stirred at room temperature for 16 h. The methanol was removed under reduced pressure and the aqueous solution was washed with ethyl acetate, acidified with HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated. This gave the product (4.1 g) with a molecular weight of 365.4 g/mol (C17H19NO6S).
