Crude (S)-tert-butyl 2-((3,5-dimethylphenyl)carbamoyl)pyrrolidine-1-carboxylate (17, 4.07 g; 10.7 mmol) is dissolved in dioxane (15 ml) followed by the addition of 4M HCl in dioxane (60 ml) Stirring at rt is continued for 30 minutes. The solvent is evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue is taken up into ether which caused the formation of a white precipitate which was filtered off, washed with ether and dried at high vacuum to give 3.299 g (quantitative yield) of (S)—N-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)pyrrolidine-2-carboxamide hydrochloride (18) as a white solid. LC-MS: tR=0.51 min; [M+H]+=219.07.
