Ethyl (4Z)-1-[(5-bromopyridin-2-yl)methyl]-4-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)hydrazono]-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylate (2.86 g, 5.70 mmol) was dissolved in toluene (30 mL), treated with hydrochloric acid (0.950 mL, 12 N aqueous, 11 mmol, 2 equiv) and placed into an oil bath preheated to 100° C. for 3 hours. The mixture was cooled to ambient temperature. The mixture was filtered and the yellow solid was collected and washed with toluene (2×10 mL), providing the titled compound.
