A 40% methylamine-methanol solution (2.65 g, 0.0341 mol) was added to a mixed solution of ethyl 2-oxo-2-[2-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxymethyl)phenyl]acetate (2.00 g, 0.0068 mol) and methanol (20 ml). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (ethyl acetate/n-hexane) to obtain N-methyl-2-oxo-2-[2-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxymethyl)phenyl]acetamide (1.30 g, Yield: 69.0%) as a colorless oil.
