6.5 moles (93.8 g) of 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl chloride are heated for 4 hours in 150 ml of ethylene glycol on a boiling water bath. The expected product crystallizes after dilution of the reaction mixture with a litre of iced water. After filtering off followed by drying at 40° C. under air vacuum the product obtained is recrystallized from isopropyl acetate. It melts at 132° C.
