Procedure

A solution of 2 [-1 (phenylmethyl) 4 piperidinyl]2,3-dihydro-lH isoindol-1-one (I, R1 =phenylmethyl. Example 7) was dissolved in 5 mL acetonitrile treated with 0.5 mL of iodomethane. The reaction mixture was allowed to stir for 18 h and the white crystalline precipitate (277 mg) was filtered off to afford I (R1 =phenylmethyl, R2 =CH3): mp 247-250° C. Anal. calcd for C20H23IN2O: C, 55.31; H, 5.34; N, 6.45. Found: 55.64; H, 5.69; N, 6.52.
