Procedure
23.5 g of aluminum chloride are added in small portions to a mixture of 30 g of 1,4-dimethoxybenzonorbornene and 13.8 g of acetyl chloride in 300 cm3 of methylene chloride. At this stage, a check is made that all the starting material has been converted. The reaction mixture is poured into 300 cm3 of water. The organic phase is washed with sodium bicarbonate, then with water, and dried over magnesium sulphate.
