Reaction Steps

A mixture of 5.9 g of 4-(diethylphosphonomethyl)-quinoline-N-oxide, 15 ml of trimethylsilyl cyanide and 7 ml of triethylamine is heated at 80° for 1 hour and evaporated to dryness. The residue is purified by chromatography on silica gel using methanol/methylene chloride (5:95) as eluant to yield 4-(diethylphosphonomethyl)-2-cyanoquinoline as an oil.
