Participants
| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | Ethyl 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)picolinate | HCID 19757799 | — |
| Catalyst | Platinum oxide (PtO) | HCID 82844 | — |
| Solvent | Acetic Acid | HCID 176 | — |
| Product | Ethyl 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperidine-2-carboxylate | HCID 19757829 | — |
Reaction Steps
A mixture of 8.37 g of ethyl 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-pyridine-2-carboxylate in 130 ml acetic acid and 4 g platinum oxide is hydrogenated at 50 lbs/in2. Filtration, concentration in vacuo, neutralization with potassium carbonate and extraction with methylene chloride yields an oil that is purified by flash chromatography using methylene chloride/methanol saturated with ammonia (20:1) to yield ethyl 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-piperidine-2-carboxylate.
