At room temperature, add thionyl chloride (2.8 ml, 2.2 equiv.) dropwise to N-t-butyloxycarbonyl-S -(4-methylbenzyl)-L-cysteine (5.0g) in methanol (500 ml) and heat the resulting mixture under reflux for 90 minutes. Cool the reaction mixture to room temperature and concentrate in vacuo to give the title compound, a white solid (4.31g), m.p. 158°-160°, [α]D26 =-22.9° (MeOH).
