Procedure

React S-(3,4-dimethylbenzyl)-L-cysteine ethyl ester hydrochloride (2.20 g) and 3-acetylthio-2-benzylpropionic acid (1.74 g) in the manner described in Example 1, Step 1 to give an amber oil. Place the oil on a column of silica gel (1 L) and elute with ethyl acetate:hexane 25:170 (4 L) and then methanol:hexane 25:170 to give a light orange oily solid. Repeat the chromatography to give Isomer A, a white solid (0.52 g), m.p. 89.5°-92.5°, [α]D26 =-71.1° (MeOH) and Isomer B, a white solid (0.60 g), m.p. 51°-55°, [α]D26 =-8.4° (MeOH).
