Fumic nitric acid (δ 1.52, 1.4 ml, 0.0336 mole) in acetic acid (16 ml) was added dropwise under stirring at 15° C. to 2-n-dodecyl-6-hydroxy-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3-(4H)-one (11.2 g, 0.0336 mole) in acetic acid. The 2-n-dodecyl-6-hydroxy-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3-(4H)-one (5.6 g, 44%) separated as orange prisms and was used as such.
