A mixture of (±)-4-(3-chlorophenyl)-6-[hydroxy(1-methyl-1H-imidazol-5-yl)(4-nitrophenyl)methyl]-1-methyl-2(1H)-quinolinone (described in Example B4) (0.00107 mol) in thionyl chloride (6 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The mixture was evaporated. The residue was taken up in CH2Cl2 and evaporated. The product was used without further purification in the next step, yielding 0.6 g (100%) of (±)-6-[chloro(1-methyl-1H-imidazol-5-yl)(4-nitrophenyl)methyl]4(3-chlorophenyl)-1-methyl-2(1H)-quinolinone monohydrochloride.
