Procedure

A mixture of (compound 218) (0.023 mol) in ethanol (200 ml) and H2SO4 (3 ml) was stirred and refluxed for 12 hours. When the reaction was complete, the solvent was evaporated, the residue was taken up in water and extracted with CH2Cl2. The organic layer was dried, filtered and the solvent evaporated. The residue was purified by column chromatography over silica gel (eluent: CH2Cl2/CH3OH/NH4OH 97/3/0.1). The pure fractions were collected and evaporated. The residue was crystallized from 2-butanone and DIPE, yielding 1.45 g (18%) of (±)-ethyl 5-[[4-[1-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-2-methylpropyl]phenyl]amino]-5-oxopentanoate (compound 219).
