Procedure

To the above ethyl (S)-4-(1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-2-pyrrolidinyl)methoxybenzoate was added MeOH (100 mL) and 1 N NaOH (50 mL). The mixture was stirred for 15 hr at room temp. After removal of MeOH under a reduced pressure, water (50 mL) was added to the residual solution. The aqueous solution was washed with Et2O (×2) and then acidified by the addition of 1 N HCl. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc., washed with water, brine, dried over MgSO4 and evaporated in vacuo to afford 4.26 g (95%) (S)-4-(1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-2-pyrrolidinyl) methoxybenzoic acid as a crystalline solid.
