3-[3-(Methylphenylsulfamoyl)phenyl]acrylic acid methyl ester (4b) (0.150 g, 0.45 mmol) was suspended in methanol (2 ml), 1 N NaOH solution (1.35 ml, 1.35 mmol) was added and the resultant solution was stirred at ambient temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The aqueous layer was acidified with 10% HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed successively with water, saturated NaCl, and dried (Na2SO4). The solvent was removed to give the title compound (0.135 g, 94%).
