The total amount of the terphenyl 9 is dissolved in 4 ml of absolute acetonitrile and reacted with 1.2 ml (6 mmol) of a 5 M solution of ICl in acetonitrile, and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The residue is crystallised at −20° C. for 2 hours. The supernatant solution is subsequently sucked off, and the product which remains is washed with 2 M Na2S2O5 (10 ml) and water (10 ml) and dried in an oil-pump vacuum (yield: 54%).
