Procedure

6.8 g of 4-hydroxymethyl-2-(3,4,4-trifluoro-3-butenylthio)oxazole and 2.5 g of pyridine were dissolved in 30 ml of chloroform, to which a solution of 5.0 g of thionyl chloride in 10 ml of chloroform was added dropwise at 0° C. After the addition the mixture was refluxed for 10 hours. After cooling to room temperature, the solvent was distilled under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography (eluent: hexane:dichloromethane=2:1) to obtain 5.7 g of 4-chloromethyl-2-(3,4,4-trifluoro-3-butenylthio)oxazole as colorless oil (yield 77.8%). n20D=1.4933.
