Reaction Steps

To a suspension of 2-[4-(2-chloroethoxy)benzoyl]-4-nitroindan-1,3-dione (27 g, 72 mmol) in THF (1200 mL) under argon was added 10% Pd/C (2 g, 1.9 mmol). The argon was evacuated and replaced by a balloon of H2. The reaction was stirred overnight and the catalyst removed by filtration. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to give the desired aniline as a yellow solid (24 g, 98% yield).
