Ethyl cyanoacetate (1.5 eq) and 2,3-diaminopyridine (1 eq) were heated at 185° C. for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and the black solid was triturated with ether. The desired product was thus obtained as a dark brown powder. LC/MS m/z 159.1 (MH+), Rt 0.44 minutes.
