Reaction Steps
To a solution of potassium hydroxide (14.0 g, 0.25 mole) in 14 ml water, is added a solution of 2-ethoxycarbonyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-(m-trifluoromethylphenoxy) isoquinoline of Example 13 (11.5 g, 0.0315 mole) in 170 ml n-propanol, and the mixture is stirred at reflux for four hours. After cooling, the solvent is evaporated to a semi-solid, which is stirred with 500 ml water for fifteen minutes, then extracted with ether. The ether extract is washed twice with water, then dried (saturated NaCl, anhydrous MgSO4).
