Procedure

A solution of bromine (9.60 g, 0.06 mmole) in methylene chloride (10 ml) was added dropwise to a solution of 3-phenoxy-4-fluorobenzaldehyde (10.8 g, 0.05 mmole) in methylene chloride (40 ml) at 20° C. taking a period of 1 hour with stirring. After the addition was finished, the reaction was continued for further 3 hours at the same temperature. The resulting solution was washed with water and then dilute aqueous potassium sulfite solution to remove the remaining bromine in the organic layer. The organic layer obtained was washed with a dilute aqueous sodium carbonate solution and then a dilute aqueous sodium chloride solution, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated.
