Reaction Steps

To a stirred solution of 9.6 parts of 3-{3-[4-(diphenylmethyl)-1-piperazinyl]propyl}-1,3-dihydro-5-methyl-1-(1-methylethenyl)-2H-benzimidazol-2-one in 80 parts of ethanol are added 24 parts of a concentrated hydrochloric acid solution and 50 parts of water (exothermic reaction: temperature rises to 50° C.). Stirring is continued for 30 minutes at room temperature. The reaction mixture is evaporated and the residue is triturated in 2-propanone. The hydrochloride salt is filtered off and the free base is liberated in the conventional manner with ammonium hydroxide. Methylbenzene is added and the precipitated free base is filtered off. It is crystallized from a mixture of 2-propanol and a small amount of N,N-dimethylformamide, yielding 1-{3-[4-(diphenylmethyl)-1-piperazinyl]propyl}-1,3-dihydro-6-methyl-2H-benzimidazol-2-one; mp. 195.7° C.
