Reaction Steps

18.4 g. of 7-(2-Oxobenzoxazolin-3-yl)-enanthic acid ethyl ester are dissolved in 60 cc. of methanol. 2.52 g. of sodium hydroxide are dissolved in methanol and added to the above solution. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 24 hours, the solvent is distilled off and the residue is dissolved in water. The aqueous solution is shaken several times with chloroform, the chloroform solution is discarded. The aqueous phase is acidified with dilute hydrochloric acid and extracted with chloroform. The chloroform solution is washed with water and dried over Na2SO4. The solvent is distilled off and the residue is purified chromatographically on silicic acid gel using hexane/ethylacetate as eluant.
