A mixture of 2-((E)-4-methoxybenzylidene)butan-1-ol (31 g) and manganese dioxide (130 g) in chloroform (600 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 20 hours. Manganese dioxide was filtered off by filtration and the filtrate was condensed to give 2-((E)-4-methoxybenzylidene)butan-1-al (9.4 g).
