Reaction Steps
Methyl 4-(1-(2-(benzyloxy)phenyl)ethoxy)benzoate (0.5 g, 1.4 mmol) was dissolved in THF (5 ml) and methanol (5 ml). The solution was treated with sodium hydroxide (1N, 6 ml) and the reaction heated at 60° for 3 hours. The solvent was removed at reduced pressure and the reaction mixture diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The aqueous phase was acidified (pH1) with concentrated HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×). The organic phases were combined, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give the title compound as a white solid (0.33 g, 68%).
