Procedure

To a stirred solution of 12.2 g (39.4 mmol) of 5-tert-butyl-4-dimethylcarbamoylsulfanyl-2-methyl-benzoic acid methyl ester (prepared in Example DDD) in toluene (140 mL) cooled to -78° C. under nitrogen was added 1.0M DIBAL/CH2Cl2 (236.6 mL), dropwise over a 2.5 hour period. The reaction mixture was stirred an additional 30 minutes at -78° C. following addition, then at 0° C. for 1 hour. Saturated aqueous citric acid solution (approximately 600 mL) was added very slowly and carefully. The mixture was then extracted twice with EtOAc; the organic phases were combined, washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated to give the title compound. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 1.47 (s, 9 H), 2.27 (s, 3 H), 3.57 (s, 1 H), 4.63 (s, 2 H), 7.06 (s, 1 H), 7.32 (s, 1 H).
