Procedure

19.5 g (88 mmol) of methyl 3-(3-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-epoxybutyrate are dissolved in 200 ml of absolute methanol, and 0.1 ml of boron trifluoride etherate is added. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 12 hours and the solvent is removed by distillation. The residue is taken up in ethyl acetate, washed with sodium bicarbonate solution and water and dried over sodium sulfate. After removal of the solvent by distillation, 21.1 g of a pale yellow oil remain.
