Reaction Steps

To a solution of 1.49 g (3.9 mmol) of 3-[2-(imidazo-[1,2-a]pyridin-5-ylthio)ethyl]thiazolidine-2,4-dione and 0.36 ml (4.0 mmol) of n-butyraldehyde in 30 ml of ethanol, 0.04 ml (0.4 mmol) of piperidine was added, followed by refluxing for 2 hours. After the reaction mixture was cooled, the solvent was distilled off. The residue was dissolved in chloroform, washed with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate and dried, after which the solvent was distilled off. The residue was purified by column chromatography (eluent, hexane/ethyl acetate=2/1→1/4), followed by recrystallization (solvent, chloroform-diethyl ether-n-hexane) to yield 0.872 g (56.1%, white crystal) of the desired product.
