2-[2-(4-Methyl-5-imidazolylmethylthio)ethylamino]-4-ethoxyquinoline (1.69 gms) and concentrated HCl (30 mls) were refluxed together for 17 hours. The solution was evaporated to dryness, the residue dissolved in water and basified with potassium carbonate. The precipitated oil was separated by decantation, washed with water and crystallised from isopropanol-water to give 2[-2-(4-methyl-5-imidazolylmethylthio)ethylamino]-4-quinolone. m.p. 121°-124° C.
