1.4 g of 2-(4-trifluoromethoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropyl alcohol prepared in the above step (1), 2.6 g of 3-phenoxy-4-fluorobenzyl bromide and 0.6 g of triethylbenzylammonium bromide were added to 20 ml of a 50% aqueous NaOH solution and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 h. Water was added thereto. After extracting with benzene, the benzene solution was washed with a dilute hydrochloric acid solution and then water and dried. Benzene was distilled off under reduced pressure and 3.6 g of an oily product thus obtained was purified according to column chromatography [silica gel, developer: toluene/hexane (1:4)] to obtain 2.0 g of 3-phenoxy-4-fluorobenzyl 2-(4-trifluoromethoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropyl ether.
