Reaction Steps

A mixture of 1-ethyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinol-3-yl benzoate (6.29 g), piperidine (2.1ml) and dichloromethane (60 ml) was stirred under nitrogen at ambient temperature for 3 days. Further piperidine (0.5 ml) was added and the mixture stirred for 24 hours. The solvent was removed by distillation and the residual solid triturated with diethyl ether (20 ml) to give the novel compound 1-ethyl-3-hydroxy-4-quinolone, m.p. 180°-182°.
