Procedure
A solution of 4-chloro-7-phenylquinoline-1-oxide (1.9 g) and potassium hydroxide (4.2 g) in industrial methylated spirit (70 ml) was heated under reflux for 3 hours. The solvent was removed by distillation and water (200 ml) was added. The mixture was filtered and the filtrate neutralised with glacial acetic acid (5 ml). The precipitate was collected by filtration and purified by crystallisation from industrial methylated spirit (100 ml) to give the novel compound '4-hydroxy-7-phenylquinoline-1-oxide, m.p. 244°-250° decomp.
