10-Bromo-1,8-dihydroxy-9-anthrone (305 mg) was dissolved in dichloromethane (10 ml) and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (0.09 ml) was added. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 3 days, during which time a yellow precipitate was formed. This precipitate was filtered off and recrystallised from absolute ethanol to give 10-(carboxyethylthio)-1,8-dihydroxy-9-anthrone (240 mg, 72.7%) as pale yellow needles, melting point 152°-15° C.
