15 g of Raney nickel are added to a solution of 100 g (0.423 mol) of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-octen-3-one in 500 ml of toluene and the mixture is stirred for 5 hours at 60° C. under a hydrogen pressure of 70-90 bar in an autoclave. After this the reaction mixture is filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. 97.3 g (96.4% of theory) of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-octanone are obtained in the form of a colorless oil. ##STR36##
