Using the procedure outlined in 15B, ethyl 3-formyl-1-methyl-1H-[1]benzothieno[2,3-g]indole-2-carboxylate gave a 31.8% yield of 2-methyl-1H-[1]benzothieno[2,3-g]indole-3-carbaldehyde, mp 192°-194°, (CH2Cl2 /petroleum ether), (C,H,N).
