Reaction Steps
Into a four-necked flask were charged 58.6 parts of 2,4-bis(4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethylbenzyl)-3,6-dimethylphenol, 21.6 parts of sodium hydroxide, 900 parts of water and 100 parts of tetrahydrofurane andthey were completely dissolved. While stirring at 40° C., 73.0 partsof 37% formaldehyde was added dropwise thereto and the reaction was conducted for 6 hours. After completion of the reaction, 36.0 parts of acetic acid was added for neutralization and then the mixture was cooled to 25° C. Thereafter, the precipitated crystalline product was filtered out and rinsed with 1000 parts of deionized water. The filtered product was dried a whole day and night under reduced pressure at 45° C. to obtain 59.5 parts of 2,4-bis(4-hydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl-2,5-dimethylbenzyl)-3,6-dimethylphenol.
