Procedure
A solution of 5-chloro-3-methylene-2-phenoxymethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]-thiophen-2-ol (16.9 g) in dichloromethane (250 ml) was shaken vigorously for a few seconds with 5M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (150 ml), then the organic solution was separated, washed with water (150 ml), dried (MgSO4), and the solvent removed in vacuo to leave 1-(5-chloro-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)-2-phenoxyethanone as a pink solid (16.4 g) which was used without further purification.
Workup
- customthe organic solution was separated
- washwashed with water (150 ml)
