2'-Deoxy-2'-(benzoylthio)uridine (2.75 mmole) was dried by co-evaporation with dry pyridine (2×20 ml) and dissolved in dry pyridine (50 ml) containing imidazole (5 mmole); tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (5 mmole) was added with stirring. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 hr. Solvent was removed under vacuo and the residue was dissolved in CH2Cl2 (100 ml), washed with 5% sodium bicarbonate solution (2×50 ml) and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Removal of solvent gave crude product 5'-O-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-2'-deoxy-2'-(benzoylthio) uridine which was purified on silica gel column chromatography.
